Today on the way to Kakadu we had some close encounters with the crocodiles in the Adelaide River.

By Sakinah Karras It was almost hard to conceptualise, that as we rode around the Darwin Harbour, the remnants of the Bombing left behind was the result of events occurring in this spot just shy of 80 years ago.  History had quite literally been cemented in this spot! Pill-Boxes used to fire weapons still sat on the cliffside, oil reserves and pipelines were rusted but still left in their original form. Within view of the water was the Parliament House built on the remains of the formerly bombed Darwin Post Office and perhaps even cooler, the USS Peary wreckage that remained at the depths of the harbour. Our guide was amazing as well, he was so informative about the area, allowing us to learn so much! Right after the cruise had finished, we headed to the Royal Flying Doctor Museum just nearby on the Wharf.                           Image from the Virtual War Memorial at  Virtual War Memorial (vwma.org.au) Going to the primary sources In our research for the trip it is very important that we seek out the primary sources for the bombing of Darwin story - to listen to and read from those who were actually there on those fateful days.  Primary sources are critical for us to understand the state of mind of those involved and to piece together a complete story of the bombing. When we are in Darwin we will be at museums that will profile the stories of the survivors of the bombing but we thought it would be good if you spent some time now listening and reading the stories of some of the survivors. Feel free to search for other sources with the survivors talking about their experiences in 1942.  Please email the links to Malcolm if you come across some survivor stories to share with the group before we go. Museums and sites to tell the story

Our 6.30am morning walk - most students up early and into exercising whilst learning history.  Today we visited the World War 2 Oil Tunnels, Goyder Park,  Ross and Keith Smith Memorial, Darwin Aviation Museum and the Northern Territory Parliament House. A lot to learn and consider in relation to the settlement of Darwin, the Bombing of Darwin, the governance of the Northern Territory, aviation over the years and the spirit of adventure.
