Leonard Arthur. Barton Leading Aircraftman 18368 was born on the 13 th of November 1910 in Rainbow, Victoria, Melbourne. Leonard was the eldest of seven children. Leonard’s father Arthur. John. Barton and his Mother Sophia. May. Wykes inherited a family business, who they then went on to build a Post office, a state school and many more buildings across the district of Rainbow. Jennie Stasinowsky by Emma Choi

  Jennie Freda Stasinowsky was born on the 30 th of June 1906, in Broken Hill, New South Wales; the fourth child of parents Johann Stasinowsky and Karen Thorgersen. Shortly subsequent to her birth, the family migrated from Broken Hill to the South Australian town of Morgan, in the region of Riverland, wherein they resided and led a career of farming for thirty ensuing years, throughout which another six children were born. Jennie Stasinowsky is documented to have been known by a number of monikers, including Jennie, Freda, Fay, or Stazzo, by varying family members and work colleagues. Upon leaving school in 1925, Jennie Stasinowsky joined the federal Postmaster-General’s Department, otherwise known as the PMG, which was accountable for the provision of postal and telegraphic services throughout Australia. She was employed as a telephonist, being responsible for answering and connecting calls, and worked in diverse South Australian locations, both rural and urban, throughout her ...

We are here! 2023 trip underway

  After a quick change of plans due to a flight cancellation, we left Adelaide at 10.00pm on Saturday 15 April (instead of 8.00am on Sunday 16 April). Well done to Aaron for this amazing re-scheduling work all day yesterday -  a marathon phone effort.  We arrived in Darwin at 1.40am on Sunday morning and all were in rooms in H on Smith by 3.30am. We met for breakfast at 9.00am and then went on our first historic walk along the Esplanade in Darwin. Here are some early photographs.  Ton ight we head down to Stokes Hill Wharf for dinner. All going well after an unexpected start to the  tour! Our first history talk on Darwin Harbour at the USS Peary Memorial. The USS Peary was a US destroyer sunk by enemy air attack in Darwin Harbour on the 19 February 1942. 92 (although the information at the site says 88) servicemen died aboard the ship, the greatest loss of life on any of the ships sunk in the attack.
