Sorry for no pictures for three days but we have been out of Internet coverage. Here are some of the great pictures from our Kakadu/Arnhem Land experience. It has been an amazing experience.  So many rocks and crocs to see!

It allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of what it was like

   A deeper connection to my great-grandpa by Kenzie King My favourite part of the trip was being able to develop a deeper connection to my great-grandpa Aza Lenden King. It was extremely special to be a 2022 Premier’s Anzac Spirit Prize Awardee after telling Aza’s story and ending up travelling to Darwin to visit some of the places he served in during WWII. I had also never been to Darwin before, so this was a new experience for me. Aza witnessed the first plane to be shot down, a US Kitty Hawk, during the bombing of Darwin in 1942, which was surreal as we went to Darwin Harbour and were lucky enough to go on a Darwin Bombing Cruise. Touring around the harbour and learning exactly where it all happened, was a unique and one-of-a-kind experience I will never forget. It allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of what it was like for Aza and others serving at the time in Darwin, which was extremely special. The cultural aspect of our tour to the Top End

The Larrakia people are the traditional owners of the Darwin region. As shown on the above map, their country runs from Cox Peninsula in the west to Gunn Point in the north, Adelaide River in the east and down to the Manton Dam area southwards. Acknowledging when in place “You have come by way of the Larrakia Land. You will hear the voice of Larrakia ancestors. When you leave, the Larrakia message will stay with you.” - The late Reverend Walter Fejo As mentioned, this tour is more than history and will involve considerable cultural and geographical learning. In fact, we cannot understand the history of a place without knowledge of the geographical and cultural context of a place. To this end, we will be travelling quite a few kilometres and visiting plenty of locations.  During these travels we will be engaging with the indigenous culture of the area and learning about their culture. Wherever we are, we need to acknowledge the attachment to place of the Aboriginal people.  See...

Telling stories at the end of the day

Adelaide River War Cemetery Every night on the trip the students are presenting their research on a person who died during the bombing of Darwin. Most of these people are buried at the Adelaide River War Cemetery. We are visiting the cemetery on Friday 23 April to conduct a commemoration service in honour of the people who died in Darwin during World War 2. Many of the students will have the opportunity after the service to visit the grave of the person they researched, to pay their respects.  Students sharing their stories at H on Smith During the week the stories the students have uncovered during their research will be posted on the blog.
