Connection by William Sims I chose to write about this photo as I felt a great connection to it. This photo shows a plaque commemorating Merchant Navy service people and the sacrifice they made. This photo is really special to me as the person I researched after being awarded the prize, Master William Michie, is listed on this plaque. At first when we were told we needed to research a person that lost their life during the Bombing of Darwin, I had no idea who I was going to write about. I ended up choosing a William as it was only fitting, as I am a William and the original entry, I wrote was on William Charles Kenwrick, my great-grandfather. I soon became really connected to William Michie and his story and felt a part of his story. Seeing his name at the Adelaide River War Cemetery was surreal. The cultural aspect of our tour to the Top End

The Larrakia people are the traditional owners of the Darwin region. As shown on the above map, their country runs from Cox Peninsula in the west to Gunn Point in the north, Adelaide River in the east and down to the Manton Dam area southwards. Acknowledging when in place “You have come by way of the Larrakia Land. You will hear the voice of Larrakia ancestors. When you leave, the Larrakia message will stay with you.” - The late Reverend Walter Fejo As mentioned, this tour is more than history and will involve considerable cultural and geographical learning. In fact, we cannot understand the history of a place without knowledge of the geographical and cultural context of a place. To this end, we will be travelling quite a few kilometres and visiting plenty of locations.  During these travels we will be engaging with the indigenous culture of the area and learning about their culture.      Image from the Virtual War Memorial at  Virtual War Memorial (vwma.org.au) I will be publishing your research stories on this blog in preparation for the presentations each night - if you have sent me a Word document with photographs of your research to me.  Please try to do so before the end of this week.  I thought it was worth re-publishing this blog posting about primary sources to get our thinking in place about the  stories from the bombing. Going to the primary sources In our research for the trip it is very important that we seek out the primary sources for the bombing of Darwin story - to listen to and read from those who were actually there on those fateful days.  Primary sources are critical for us to understand the state of mind of those involved and to piece together a complete story of the bombing.
