The cultural aspect of our tour to the Top End

The Larrakia people are the traditional owners of the Darwin region. As shown on the above map, their country runs from Cox Peninsula in the west to Gunn Point in the north, Adelaide River in the east and down to the Manton Dam area southwards. Acknowledging when in place “You have come by way of the Larrakia Land. You will hear the voice of Larrakia ancestors. When you leave, the Larrakia message will stay with you.” - The late Reverend Walter Fejo As mentioned, this tour is more than history and will involve considerable cultural and geographical learning. In fact, we cannot understand the history of a place without knowledge of the geographical and cultural context of a place. To this end, we will be travelling quite a few kilometres and visiting plenty of locations.  During these travels we will be engaging with the indigenous culture of the area and learning about their culture. Getting ready to go to Darwin

  Getting ready to head-off to Darwin and surrounds on 16 Apri l After a few false starts and the disappointment of the study tour to France being cancelled because of the pandemic, the 2020 Premier's Anzac Spirit School Prize students are finally approved to travel to Darwin and the Top End of the Northern Territory during April this year.   The historical focus is learning about and commemoration of the Bombing of Darwin during World War 2.  As you will see from the itinerary below, the study tour also has a strong cultural and geographical focus as the group travels from Darwin to Kakadu, to Katherine and then onto Litchfield National Park.  The trip is planned and the itinerary is as follows: Fri, 16 April 2021 0730 Depart Adelaide Airport (QF858) to Darwin.   Da isy Martin was just starting her life when it was cut tragically short due to the Darwin bombings on the 19 th of February 1942. Daisy was born in 1924 with a mixed race of half indigenous and half white. The years of Daisy’s childhood were during the “Stolen Generation” period, and it is very likely that Daisy would have spent time or even been raised at one of these missions or facilities in the Northern Territory. At the time of the bombings, Daisy was working as a housekeeper at Government house. At this time Mr Abbot was the administrator of Darwin. At the time, a large group consisting of Government House staff, including Daisy Martin, Mr and Mrs Abbot and Mrs Abbot’s servants were taking refuge in the Administrator’s office as the bombs fell. The office took an almost direct hit, only 15 metres separated the office from the impact (Figure 1) .
